Vanaf wanneer heeft je baby een zonnebril nodig?

When does your baby need sunglasses?

Babies have sensitive eyes, but when is the right time to put sunglasses on them? Bright light can be harmful from just a few months of age. Whether you’re out with the stroller, driving in the car, or enjoying time outdoors, sunglasses are a must. In this blog, you’ll learn from what age sunglasses are suitable and when your baby needs extra protection.

Why do babies need sunglasses?

Babies’ eyes are much more sensitive to UV radiation than adults’ eyes. The eye lens is still developing and filters out fewer UV rays, allowing harmful radiation to penetrate deeper. Too much exposure to UV radiation can cause problems later in life, such as eye damage or an increased risk of cataracts.

That’s why it’s important to protect your baby from an early age—not only with a sun hat and shade, but also with sunglasses that block all UV radiation.

At what age can your baby wear sunglasses?

At Maesy, we have sunglasses that often fit babies as young as 2.5 to 3 months. This varies from child to child, as head circumference and fit are more important than age. As soon as you notice that your baby is sensitive to bright light—for example, squinting or turning their head away—it’s a good time to introduce sunglasses.

Our baby size is suitable for head circumferences of 36–49 cm, perfect for the littlest ones.

When should your baby wear sunglasses?

Sunglasses aren’t only useful at the beach or in bright sunlight. These are situations when extra protection is needed:

☀️ Outside in the stroller – The sun often shines directly into their face. A sun canopy helps, but sunglasses provide the best protection.

🚗 In the car – UV rays pass through car windows. Sunglasses prevent glare and irritation, especially when travelling rear-facing.

🌳 During outdoor play – In the park, in the garden or in a baby carrier. UV radiation is present even on cloudy days.

🚴♀️ On a bicycle – The sun can be bright, and the wind can irritate their eyes. Sunglasses make the ride more comfortable and safer.

🛶 On and around the water – Water strongly reflects sunlight, exposing your baby to extra UV radiation.

Why Maesy? Soft, safe and comfortable sunglasses

Babies don’t always like wearing accessories on their faces. That’s why Maesy sunglasses are designed with both comfort and protection in mind:

✔️ 100% UV400 protection – Blocks all harmful UV rays.

✔️ CE Category 3 – Perfect for everyday use without being too dark.

✔️ Lightweight and flexible – Comfortable to wear without pressing.

✔️ With an elastic strap – Stays securely in place, even on wiggly little heads.

Tips for helping your baby get used to sunglasses

  • Start with short periods and gradually increase the time.
  • Put on sunglasses yourself too—babies learn by imitation.
  • Let your child get used to them in the shade first, so the light isn’t immediately too bright.
  • Choose glasses that fit comfortably so your baby won’t want to take them off straight away.

With the right protection, your baby can safely enjoy every sunny moment! 🌞👶
