Polarized sunglasses for children: what are the benefits?
What are polarized sunglasses, and why are they great for children? Find out how polarized lenses reduce distracting glare, how they differ from UV400, and what to look for in good sunglasses for babies or children. With handy tips from Maesy!
A day at the beach, playing outside, or enjoying a sunny vacation together. Of course, sunglasses come along! But did you know that not all sunglasses handle bright light in the same way? 😎
You’ve probably come across the term polarized lenses before. It may sound a little technical, but the idea behind it is actually very simple.
Polarized sunglasses help reduce bothersome glare, for example when sunlight reflects off water or other shiny surfaces. This can make looking around on sunny days much more comfortable.
But what exactly are polarized sunglasses? And can your baby or child benefit from them too? We’d be happy to explain! ☀️
😎 What are polarized sunglasses?
Polarized sunglasses have lenses with a special filter that blocks certain reflections of light.
Just imagine: you’re sitting on the beach and the sun is shining on the water. The light reflects and creates those bright, sometimes blinding flashes. Not always pleasant for little eyes!
A polarization filter helps reduce this glare. This can make your vision feel more relaxed and comfortable.
That’s the main difference from regular sunglasses lenses: polarized lenses not only reduce bright light, but also certain bothersome reflections.
☀️ Why are polarized lenses great for children?
Children love spending time outdoors. From playing in the sandbox to splashing by the water and going on adventures during vacations.
Polarized lenses can be especially helpful in moments like these.
- ✔️ Less bothersome glare: For example, from water, wet tiles, and other smooth surfaces.
- ✔️ More comfortable vision: Reflections are reduced, making it more comfortable to see in bright sunlight.
- ✔️ More comfortable during outdoor activities: From a walk to a day at the beach.
- ✔️ Less glare: Especially when sunlight is strongly reflected.
So polarized sunglasses are a great extra for little adventurers who love playing and exploring outdoors. 💛
🔍 What is the difference between polarized and regular sunglasses lenses?
Regular sunglasses with a suitable filter category reduce the amount of visible light that reaches your eyes. Polarized lenses do that too, but also have a special filter to block certain types of glare.
Here's a clear overview of the differences:
| Feature | Regular sunglasses lenses | Polarized lenses |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce bright sunlight | Yes, depending on the filter category | Yes, depending on the filter category |
| Reduce bothersome reflections | Limited | Yes, thanks to the polarizing filter |
| UV protection | Depending on the UV filter | Depending on the UV filter |
| Comfort when there's glare on water | Can be comfortable | Often more comfortable |
Good to know: polarized does not automatically mean sunglasses offer better UV protection. For that, you need to check the UV filter.
🌈 Does polarized mean the same as UV400?
No! This may be the most important thing to remember.
Polarization and UV400 each serve a different purpose.
- ☀️ UV400: Protects the eyes from UV radiation up to a wavelength of 400 nanometers, including UVA and UVB radiation.
- 😎 Polarization: Reduces bothersome glare by blocking certain reflections of visible light.
- 👓 Category 3: Indicates that the lenses let through only 8 to 18% of visible light, which is comfortable in bright sunlight.
So sunglasses can be polarized without providing sufficient UV protection. Conversely, non-polarized sunglasses with a UV400 filter can provide excellent protection against UV radiation.
The combination of UV400, a suitable filter category, and polarized lenses can therefore be very comfortable for sunny outdoor activities.
Wondering exactly what all those labels mean? Then read our guide to UV400, category 3, and the CE mark on children's sunglasses.
🏖️ When are polarized sunglasses useful for your child?
Polarized sunglasses can come in handy on many occasions. For example:
A day at the beach or pool 💦
Water reflects sunlight and can cause quite a bit of glare. Polarized lenses help reduce these reflections, so your child can look around more comfortably.
Playing in the garden or on the playground
Wet tiles, windows, and other glossy surfaces can also reflect sunlight. A polarizing filter helps block certain types of glare.
A walk or bike ride with the family 🚲
From a sunny walk with the stroller to a pleasant bike ride, polarized lenses can make it more comfortable to see when there are annoying reflections.
On vacation or during winter sports ❄️
Snow can also reflect bright sunlight. Polarized lenses can reduce some of that glare. Keep in mind, though, that polarization can make some reflections on ice less visible. Suitable eye protection for the conditions is important when skiing and taking part in other winter sports.
💛 Do Maesy sunglasses have polarized lenses?
Absolutely! At Maesy, we believe that good eye protection and wearing comfort go hand in hand.
That’s why our baby and children’s sunglasses have polarized TAC lenses with UV400 protection and Category 3.
That means the lenses:
- ✔️ Provide UV400 protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays.
- ✔️ Be polarized to reduce annoying glare.
- ✔️ Have Category 3 lenses to significantly reduce bright visible sunlight.
And of course, we look beyond just the lenses. Our sunglasses have a flexible, lightweight TPE frame, making them comfortable to wear on all kinds of little and big adventures.
For babies and toddlers, an adjustable elastic strap is also included. This helps keep the sunglasses in place as they explore and play.
Because good children’s sunglasses shouldn’t just protect their eyes, they should also be comfortable to wear! ☀️
👶 What else should you look for in children’s sunglasses?
Polarized lenses are a nice extra, but they’re not the only thing to consider.
A good pair of sunglasses for your baby or child should ideally have:
- ✔️ A reliable UV filter, such as UV400.
- ✔️ A filter category suited to the light conditions.
- ✔️ A comfortable fit that doesn’t pinch or slip down.
- ✔️ Lenses that provide good coverage for the eyes.
- ✔️ A sturdy, child-friendly frame.
Getting the right size is especially important. Sunglasses that fit well stay in place more comfortably and help block sunlight coming from the sides.

❓ Frequently asked questions about polarized sunglasses for children
What do polarized sunglasses do?
Polarized sunglasses reduce distracting glare from reflected light, for example from water, wet roads, or other shiny surfaces. This can make it more comfortable to see in bright sunlight.
Are polarized sunglasses better for children?
Polarized lenses can provide extra comfort by reducing glare, but they don't automatically offer better protection against UV radiation. Good UV protection, a suitable filter category, and a comfortable fit remain the most important.
What's the difference between polarized and UV400?
UV400 protects the eyes against UV radiation up to 400 nanometers. Polarization reduces distracting reflections of visible light. They are two different features that can work well together.
Does a baby need polarized sunglasses?
Polarization isn't essential for good UV protection, but it can provide extra comfort in bright, reflected sunlight. For babies, a suitable UV filter, a comfortable fit, and plenty of shade are more important.
Can polarized sunglasses make it harder to look at a screen?
That can happen. Some phones, tablets, and other screens may appear darker or be harder to read through polarized lenses. This is a normal effect of the polarization filter.
Are Maesy sunglasses polarized?
Yes, our baby and children's sunglasses have polarized TAC lenses with UV400 protection and category 3. This combines protection against UV radiation with reduced glare.
